Why I Gave My AI Assistant Its Own Computer

I use AI every day, but for a long time, working with an AI agent required me to sit in front of a chat window. I gathered the context, supplied the files, explained the task, and kept the conversation moving. Longer tasks required my laptop to stay awake. If it slept or I shut it down, the work stopped.

I wanted to hand an assistant a task and let it keep working whether I was at my desk or away from it. It should remember what it had learned, use a browser, and carry useful context into the next assignment. As I taught it how I work, I could trust it with increasingly complex tasks and give it less direction each time.

That assistant needed a computer of its own.

This idea eventually became Norse Computer. Today, I am making it available to anyone who wants to run a personal AI assistant this way.

What “its own computer” means

The computer is a persistent environment in the cloud. It stays online, holds the assistant’s files and memory, and gives the assistant a place to use its tools. It can open a browser, run commands, work with documents, and connect to the services you authorize.

Keeping the assistant in my own cloud changes what I am comfortable connecting to it. Email, files, accounts, and browser sessions contain the context it needs to do serious work. I would hesitate to give that level of access to an assistant running in a vendor’s environment. With the agent running in my own cloud account, I control where its credentials, memory, files, and logs live. I also control exactly which systems it can reach.

Recurring work is one of the biggest benefits I have found. I set up scheduled jobs in Hermes, and it delivers ready work on schedule. It can prepare a morning briefing, run a weekly check, or assemble a report without waiting for me to open my laptop and ask. The assistant keeps working in the background while I do something else.

I can also hand it an assignment whenever something comes up. It might gather private context behind an email and prepare a reply, organize files, or work through a browser-based process. Some tasks take a few minutes. Others run longer and come back when they are done or need a decision.

The cloud environment also gives the assistant continuity. It can keep notes about your preferences, remember where important information lives, and reuse instructions that worked before. You spend less time reconstructing the same context at the start of every conversation.

Why I built on Hermes Agent

Hermes Agent is the best foundation I have found for this kind of assistant. It is capable, customizable, and designed to operate with real tools.

Hermes can work with files, use a terminal, search the web, automate a browser, and run scheduled tasks. It can also write code, including programs for itself to use again later. Its memory carries useful context across sessions. If I teach it a task and like the result, I can save the instructions as a skill and keep refining them.

I can show the assistant how I like something done, correct it, and save those lessons. The next time it handles similar work, it starts with what I already taught it.

Hermes is also open source. I can inspect it, change it, and decide which capabilities to enable. The assistant can grow with my needs while its memory, skills, and working files remain in an environment I control.

I can use models from different providers and choose different models for different kinds of work. A difficult research task can use one model while a routine scheduled job uses another. I can change those choices as the available models improve.

Hermes keeps getting better, too. The project moves quickly, with regular improvements to its tools, interfaces, and agent capabilities. That makes it a strong base for an assistant I expect to use for years.

A durable setup takes more than a virtual machine

Installing Hermes is only one part of running it well. Once I began relying on scheduled work that ran while I was away, the surrounding infrastructure became much more important.

The assistant needs persistent storage so its memory and files survive a restart. It needs secure access from wherever I happen to be. It needs backups, monitoring, and an alert when something goes wrong. Updates should preserve the configuration and work history that have accumulated over time.

There are also a surprising number of cloud decisions along the way: networking, domain names, HTTPS certificates, service identities, firewall rules, storage, and permissions. A setup can work perfectly on the first day and still be difficult to maintain six months later.

I developed an approach for running Hermes for myself, then refined it while setting it up for other people. I learned which pieces were easy to miss and which choices made later upgrades safer. Reproducing that setup by hand still took time and cloud expertise, so I built Norse Computer to make it repeatable.

Norse Computer handles the foundation

Norse Computer deploys Hermes Agent into your own Google Cloud account using the architecture I recommend. You sign in, subscribe for $30 a month, and connect Google Cloud. A Norse Computer AI agent guides you through the account decisions and performs the technical work.

The deployment creates the machine, network, persistent storage, private dashboard, backups, monitoring, and secure web access. Most deployments finish in less than 30 minutes. Once Hermes is live, you connect your model provider and choose a model.

Your Google Cloud account and model provider account stay in your name. Once Norse Computer releases its temporary cloud access, you receive a downloadable owner’s manual that records how the deployment is built, explains maintenance and recovery, and shows how to run it without Norse Computer. The subscription covers Hermes updates, security patches, and infrastructure improvements, so you can keep building on the same assistant without maintaining the cloud setup yourself.

You decide what your assistant should learn, which systems it can use, and when it should ask before acting. Start with a small set of tools, expand access as the assistant earns your trust, and require approval for consequential actions. Its credentials and working data stay inside the cloud account you own.

Start with one task you already understand

Choose a modest first assignment: something you do often enough to explain clearly. Recurring work is a good place to begin because you already know when it should run and what the result should look like. Once scheduled, it runs in the background and delivers the result when you need it.

Have it prepare the same report you assemble every Monday. Ask it to check a source each morning and summarize any changes. Give it a browser task with a clear result.

Work through the task together the first time. Explain what it missed and show it what a good result looks like. Once it gets the task right, save the instructions. If the work follows a schedule, set it to run on its own.

My assistant became useful this way, one task at a time. Its memory and capabilities developed alongside the work. Over time, I could hand it assignments that would have required much more supervision at the beginning.
